Update Your Display Name and/or Pronouns in Canvas

Reflect Your Whole Self on Canvas

Let's make sure your Canvas profile reflects who you are and what name you choose!

Perhaps you want to change your Canvas display name? Or maybe you would like to add your pronouns? While Canvas automatically pulls from your DVC Admissions and Records and/or HR file (if you are an employee), you have the option to change and customize this information through your account profile. Let Canvas reflect the amazing person that you are!

Updating your Display Name in Canvas

Both instructors and students have the ability to update their display names on Canvas. Some reasons for name changes might be:

Personal preference
Nicknames
Gender identity
Marriage or divorce
Pronunciation
International student

Learn more about how to update your display name in Canvas Links to an external site. as needed. Please note that updating your display name does not update your name on the official record. This means your full, legal name will still be viewable in Canvas gradebook.

If you are a student needing to update your name in a more official capacity (class rosters, email, and your Student ID card), please login to InSite to complete the Chosen Name Form. You will first be required to login to you InSite account then you will complete the form for submission. (Your full legal name will still be used on official records like transcripts and tax forms until otherwise changed through the legal process.)

Updating your Pronouns in Canvas

As an addition to your Canvas profile, consider updating your personal pronouns in your Canvas profile Links to an external site.. Personal pronouns display after your name in various areas in Canvas, including:

Comment Fields
Discussions
Inbox
People Page (Course and Groups)
User Navigation Menu
User Profile Page
User Settings Page
